The Rule of 3

When communicating information, it should be broken down into three parts:

  1. the main point,
    • The most important piece of information,
  2. the supporting details,
    • Provides context and additional information,
  3. and the conclusion.
    • Sums up the main point and highlights the main takeaways.

Benefits

  • Make communication more clear, effective, and memorable.
  • Help the listener to understand, retain and act on the information being communicated.
  • Help to communicate clearly and persuasively.

Caesar: I came, I saw, and I conquered.

Aristotle

  1. Ethos: first establish credibility and character
  2. Logos: then bring in the rational argument and facts
  3. Pathos: then engage the emotions and connect with an audience

Publick speaking:

  • "Tell them, tell them again, then tell them what you said."

Simon Sinek's Golden Circle:

  1. Why - to explain the motivation behind something and engage the emotions (through the limbic system and older part of the brain)
  2. How - to explain how this will help people
  3. What - to cover the benefit in logical terms (engaging the neocortex or rational brain)
