Itching in the scalp and dandruff

Itching in the scalp and dandruff are common conditions that can be caused by a variety of factors such as:

  • an overgrowth of a type of yeast called Malassezia, which can irritate the scalp and cause flaking.
  • stress
  • hormonal imbalances,
  • dry scalp,
  • fungal infections,
  • or improper hair care.

In Ayurveda, this condition is known as Darunaka.

Tips for managing Dandruff

Here are some suggestions for managing itching in the head and dandruff:

Maintain good hygiene

Regularly washing your hair with a gentle shampoo and keeping your scalp clean and dry can help prevent the buildup of oils and dead skin cells that can contribute to dandruff.

Use a medicated shampoo

Anti-dandruff shampoos containing active ingredients like ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or pyrithione zinc can help control the growth of the yeast that causes dandruff. Use the shampoo as directed and leave it on your scalp for a few minutes before rinsing.

Try natural remedies

Some people find that natural remedies like tea tree oil or aloe vera can help soothe an itchy scalp and reduce dandruff. You can apply aloe vera gel directly to your scalp.

Herbs like neem, fenugreek, or amla can be used to treat your scalp. Make a paste of neem leaves or fenugreek seeds and apply it to your scalp before washing your hair.

Massage with oils

Regularly massage your scalp with warm coconut oil, almond oil, or olive oil. This helps to improve blood circulation and nourish the scalp. You can also use amla oil to massage your scalp. Dilute tea tree oil with a carrier oil like coconut oil and massage it into your scalp

Avoid harsh hair products

Certain hair products like hairsprays or gels can irritate your scalp and exacerbate dandruff and itching. Try to avoid these products or choose ones that are specifically formulated for sensitive scalps.

Maintain a healthy diet

Consume a diet rich in vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin D, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids, as these are essential for healthy hair and scalp.

Reduce stress

Stress can also trigger scalp problems, so try to practice relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises to reduce stress levels.

See a dermatologist

If your itching and dandruff persist despite home remedies, or if you notice redness or sores on your scalp, it's best to see a dermatologist for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. They may prescribe stronger medicated shampoos or recommend other treatments like corticosteroid creams or phototherapy.
